Children's Podiatry in Mullingar

Children regularly present with routine issues such as verrucaes and ingrown toenails. However often parents present to clinic with their children with more complicated concerns regarding posture, unusual walking patterns and deformities of the foot. Aisling is here to provide parents with the reassurance of normal child development and when or if it is necessary to intervene. Often paediatric issue can be resolved with some easy child friendly postural exercises, other cases may require a paediatric orthotic device but Aisling will assess and give the most optimal treatment advice to ensure your child is walking pain free.

Fortunately most children I see are young healthy individuals-their development is uncomplicated. However conditions such as cerebal palsy, leukemia, diabetes and juvenile arthritis are ones which affect the lower limbs in different ways. I thoroughly enjoy working with pediatrics and there is no feeling as rewarding as providing care to these children in the most comfortable setting.

Conditions

Paediatric flat foot – Some children can appear to have flatter feet than others i.e. their arches appear to be lowered. However do not be concerned; paediatric flatfoot is generally a condition that a child will grow out of. As time goes on a child will lose its fatty padding around the arch to develop a more prominent arch profile.

Treatment

With this condition it is important to have the feet assessed to ensure this is normal development or if there is a more serious underlying issue.

Conditions

Severs Disease – Severs disease is the most common cause of heel pain in children between the ages of 8-14. The pain is generally worse during or after activity and can limit chidrens acivity levels, restrict their participation in certain sports and have and have an adverse affect on their quality of life. Severs disease occurs during the periods where child may be growing through growth spurts.

Treatment

Some postural rehabilitation exercises demonstrated here in clinic will be advised. A pediatric orthotic device may be necessary depending on the severity of the disease.

Conditions

Plantar Warts – Plantar warts are caused by the human papiloma virus and are spread through direct person to person contact. These are particularly common in children who participate in swimming. In appearance verrucaes have a rough surface covered in black dots which are thrombosed capillaries.

Treatment

Treatment of verrucaes are patient dependent. The treatment for each person depends on the age, anatomical location, appearance and size to determine which treatment option will work best. Salicylic acid and silver nitrate are used here on clinic.

Conditions

Bunions – Bunions are not just an issue that can affect older people. In fact bunions generally begin to develop when we are very young. A bunion is a progressive disorder which occurs very slowly over time. Often it is not until we are older a bunion is noticed.

Treatment

With a bunion it is best treated at an early stage to prevent its progression. There are different devices I recommend to help keep the toe straight and prevent further progression of this deformity.
